No. 6/7 Women’s Basketball downs Fairfield 70-52 in NCAA Tournament opener

Aaliyah Moore and Rori Harmon each post double-doubles as the Longhorns advance to Sunday’s round of 32
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 6/7 Texas Women's Basketball Team kicked off the 2022 NCAA Tournament Friday evening with a 70-52 first round victory over Fairfield inside the Frank Erwin Center.
With the win, the No.2-seeded Longhorns (27-6) run their win streak to 12 games and advance to Sunday's round of 32 where they'll square off with No. 7 Utah. Tip time is slated for 4 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN.
Texas came out of the gates fast, outscoring the Stags 14-9 in the first quarter and 25-9 in the second quarter to take a 21-point into the locker room. The Longhorns shot 44.1 percent (15-of-34) in the half.
The UT offense went cold in the third and Fairfield closed the gap outscoring the Longhorns 23-15 in the quarter. Texas pulled away for good with a 16-11 final frame to cap off the victory.
Freshman forward Aaliyah Moore had a career night as she paced the UT offense with a career-high 18 points and notched her first-career double-double performance with a team-high 10 rebounds. The Moore, Okla., native shot 4-of-7 from the field and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the charity stripe.
Freshman Rori Harmon recorded her third double-double of the season as she logged 10 points and dished 11 assists, matching a career-best.
Senior Lauren Ebo was the third Longhorns to finish in double figured as she finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 from the field and brought down seven rebounds.
Texas forced 22 Fairfield turnovers in the game, which led to 20 points and committed 14 turnovers on the other end. UT held a 38-28 rebounding advantage in the contest
The Longhorns finished the game shooting 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 40 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range and 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free throw line.
The Stags finished the game shooting 35.7 percent (15-of-42) from the field and 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from behind the arc.
Fairfield was led offensively by Lou Lopez-Senechal who finished with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Callie Cavanaugh and Rachel Hakes added 10 points, respectively.
The Longhorns will now turn their attention the Utes, who coming off of an impressive 92-69 victory over Arkansas in the first round matchup.
