Two Longhorns Champion on Day 1 of Big 12 Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 1 Texas track and field team opened day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships championing two events, one on each men's and women's teams.
Haftu Knight became the first-ever Longhorn to win the men's 10,000m run at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. Knight ran the final lap in 59.71 to give Texas its first win of the meet. Abraham Avila-Martinez finished fifth with his time of 30:07.86, while Isaac Alonzo finish eighth at 30:46.44. The Longhorns totaled 15 team points in the event.
Beth Ramos was the top finished for Texas in the women's 10K to start the day with a fourth-place finish and a time of 34:54.09. Ava Peeples added an eighth-place finish with her time of 36:13.45.
Rhiley Fritz became the fourth Longhorn to win the women's javelin with a throw of 50.22m (164-9) to win the first even on the women's side. Gabby Kearney finished sixth, scoring three points with a throw of 44.14m (144-10).
Kristine Blazevica leads the heptathlon after four events with a personal-best day one 3,563 points. She set a PB in the 100m hurdles (13.48), won the high jump at 1.76m, finished fifth in the shot put at 12.18m and won the 200m with a time of 24.76.
After five events, Phillip Frank sits in sixth in the decathlon with 3,892 points, while Demetri Whitsett finished the day in ninth with 3,694 points.
Jack Garey closed out the day in the men's javelin in seventh with a throw of 57.70m (189-4), while Alex Loving finished ninth at 54.12m (177-7).
