Stearns and Collins will compete in 64-player singles draw, while Stearns/Allura Zamarripa claim spot in 32-team doubles draw.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas women's tennis sophomores Peyton Stearns and Kylie Collins were selected to the 64-player singles draw, and the duo of Stearns and freshman Allura Zamarripa was chosen to the 32-team doubles draw at the upcoming 2022 NCAA Championships. First-round pairings and the brackets for the singles and doubles draws will be released at a later date.
Stearns, No. 2 in the latest ITA national singles rankings, will be the No. 2 seed at the NCAA Singles Championship. She has registered a 23-1 overall mark in singles this year. A two-time Big 12 Player of the Week selection this season (March 22 and March 29), Stearns has posted a 20-1 record on court 1 in dual-match play this spring and tallied a 13-1 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. She previously garnered recognition as the Big 12 Player of the Year, the Most Outstanding Performer at the Big 12 Championship, All-Big 12 singles first team and the Big 12 individual champion at No. 1 singles. This will mark Stearns' second NCAA singles appearance, as she advanced to the Round of 32 in 2021.
Collins, No. 48 in the latest ITA national singles rankings, has posted a 25-9 overall singles record this season. The Big 12 Player of the Week on April 12, she has recorded a 13-6 mark on court 2 in dual-match play this spring. During the fall, Collins won the ITA Texas Regional singles title (Oct. 15-18) with three victories against ranked opponents during her run. She has previously earned spots on the All-Big 12 singles second team and the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team at both No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles (with Charlotte Chavatipon). This will mark Collins' first NCAA singles appearance. Last year, she paired with former Longhorn Lulu Sun and advanced to the finals of the 2021 Doubles Championship.
Stearns and Allura Zamarripa are No. 11 in the latest ITA national doubles rankings and have posted a 9-2 record in dual-match doubles play this spring. The duo previously claimed All-Big 12 doubles first-team honors. This will mark the first NCAA doubles appearance for both Stearns and Zamarripa.
The NCAA singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill., after the conclusion of the team championship. All matches will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
The No. 4 national seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, Texas returns to the courts when it hosts Ball State (19-4) in the NCAA First Round on Friday, May 6. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center, and admission for the general public is free.
