Neugebauer finishes as runner-up in decathlon at NCAA Championship

UT women advance nine entries to finals on Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. – Leo Neugebauer finished as the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field runner-up in the men's decathlon with a personal-best score of 8,362 points.
After a historic first day, Neugebauer started the day with a time of 14.67 in the 110m hurdles. He later added the top throw in Flight 1 of the discus at 50.77m174 and then finished with a clearance of 4.81m (15-9.25).
He waited until the javelin for his fifth personal-best mark of the decathlon with a throw of 53.12m (174-3). The All-American finished the day with a personal-best time of 4:42.68 in the 1500m to total the second-best score in Texas history (8,362) behind Trey Hardee.
Neugebauer's finish was the highest non-winning finish in NCAA history.

After 12 points from Tripp Piperi and Stacy Brown Jr., Texas men now have 20 heading into the final day.
On the women's side, Tyra Gittens became an 11-time First Team All-American after finishing third in the long jump with a jump of 6.57m (21-6.75). Freshman Ackelia Smith earned her second All-American honor with an eighth-place finish in the same event at 6.34m (20-9.75).
The No. 1 Texas women advanced all but two entries on the track, totaling nine advancing to finals on Saturday.
The women's 4x100 began the night by breaking its previous Texas and NCAA-leading time at 42.34. Julien Alfred, Rhasidat Adeleke, Kevona Davis and Kynnedy Flannel have the led the NCAA in the event the entire season and now have the four fastest times in school history.

Alfred was the first individual to advance to the finals after running the fastest-qualifying time of 10.90, which was tied for the third fastest time ever in NCAA history. Davis claimed the final spot in Saturday's final with her time of 11.11.
Later, both Stacey Ann Williams and Kennedy Simon advanced to the 400m final after both ran personal-bests in their respected heats. Williams' time of 50.18 improved her Texas all-time spot at No. 4, while Simon advanced with the third-fastest time of the day at 50.45. Williams' time also equals the No. 6 time in meet history.
Valery Tobias was the lone Longhorn to compete in the 800m and earned a spot in her first NCAA Outdoor final after winning Heat 1 with a time of 2:03.50.
The track remained hot for Texas as Flannel added an individual final to her name as she qualified for the 200m dash with her time of 22.25. Davis added her third final to her name after a blazing finish of 22.38.

Texas closed out its perfect day of advancing relays after running 3:27.88 to win Heat 2 of the 4x400 relay. Simon, Adeleke, Alfred and Williams made it a perfect four-for-four for Texas in the relays, marking the first time in Longhorn history both the men's and women's relays have qualified for finals in the same championships.
