Sanders enters his second season with the Longhorns having played in 12 games last season as a true freshman, appearing primarily on special teams with the field goal unit. As a blocking tight end, he helped placekicker Cameron Dicker connect on 13-of-15 field goals with a long of 50 yards and 49-of-50 after point tries. Prior to his arrival on the Forty Acres, Sanders was an All-America, all-state and two-time all-district honoree in high school who helped Denton Ryan to the 5A Division 1 state title in 2020.
The award is named for NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey, who is considered to be one of the best to have played the tight end position. Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA. The award is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.
