The Details
Over the first few minutes of the match, Texas Southern did a good job in possession, but the Tigers couldn't gain entry into the Texas defensive third.
The Longhorns quickly settled into the contest as Missimo rattled a shot off the left post at the 4:08 mark, and Miller struck a follow-up effort wide right.
Byars came close to getting on the scoresheet in the seventh minute, but her eight-yard attempt near the left post rolled wide of frame.
Texas eventually got on the scoreboard off a corner kick at 7:06 as a Missimo delivery into the middle was headed home from five yards out by a completely unmarked EmJ Cox to make it 1-0.
That opened the floodgates as the Longhorns eventually scored seven times over the opening 45 minutes of action while out-shooting the Tigers, 32-0.
Just 2:22 after the Burnt Orange & White grabbed the advantage, Byars doubled it by dribbling into the left side of the box and slotting a seven-yard shot off the inside of the right post and into the twine.
With Texas' offense buzzing around its offensive third, Byars scored again at 14:01 to make it 3-0. Off a Tiger turnover, Missimo turned quickly and dribbled towards the top of the box. The reigning Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week passed out left to Miller who quickly slotted a cross to Byars near the penalty spot. The Richardson, Texas, product fired from eight yards out, but Texas Southern goalkeeper Jaidyn Christophe managed to save the ball up in the air before reaching back towards the goal mouth to tap it back out front. Byars wasted no time by racing in to clear up the rebound on a four-yard header.
During the 22nd minute, EmJ Cox started another scoring play with a header off a defender in front. The ball bounced straight back out to Brooks who laced a 12-yard shot off the left post. Regan reacted fastest to hammer home the additional ricochet from near the penalty spot to boost Texas' lead to 4-0.
A long Regan pass up the left wing located Ward entering the left edge of the box in the 37th minute. The North Vancouver, British Columbia, product took a quick dribble to her right and hit an eight-yard shot off the inside of the left upright and into the twine for a 5-0 advantage.
Texas got some Tiger assistance to make it 6-0 at the 37:52 mark. Redshirt sophomore center back Charlotte Bluemel christened the chaos on a shot from the middle of the 18. TSU's Christophe managed to save the effort, but her deflection out to the left struck defender Alyssa Taylor on the hip and went in for an own goal.
With time running short in the opening stanza, Akindoju added another for Texas at 43:22 to make it 7-0. Ahern took possession and headed up the right side before passing forward to Worden. The Riverside, Calif., native lifted a cross towards the right post that found an on-the-run Akindoju. Clear in front of her marker, the Halifax, Nova Scotia, product quickly volleyed a seven-yard shot into the right side of the twine.
Out of the halftime break, Byars finalized her second career hat trick at 55:18. Miller did great work to save a ball near midfield from going over the sideline and passed ahead to Missimo. The Southlake, Texas, native lifted a perfectly weighted pass over the backline directly into the path of Byars entering the top of the 18, and she slotted home into the left side of the net from 12 yards.
Texas Southern managed its first shot at 58:20 as Melissa Knutson fired wide right from 30-plus yards out. TSU would eventually get one more chance from distance at 71:53, but Kaila Smith also missed wide right.
History was made during the 77th minute as Texas sub Worden blasted an 18-yard effort over the bar to represent the Longhorns single-match record 47th shot.
From there, the Burnt Orange & White continued to create opportunities, but Texas Southern's Christophe played strong between the pipes as Texas eventually settled for an eight-goal victory.
