CARY, N.C. — A pair of University of Texas Women's Tennis players will compete in the singles competition at the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Women's All-American Championships, the ITA announced Friday. Sophomore Vivian Ovrootsky will begin play in the pre-qualifying singles draw on Saturday, Oct. 1, while graduate Marlee Zein is slated to compete in the qualifying singles draw starting on Monday, Oct. 3.
The tournament will be contested at Cary Tennis Park (Cary, N.C.) from Oct. 1-9. Pre-qualifying singles will be held on Oct. 1-2, and qualifying singles will be played on Oct. 3-4. The singles main draw is slated for Oct. 5-9. Singles play will feature best 2-out-of-3 sets with no-ad scoring.
Both Ovrootsky and Zein had successful runs in the singles main draw at the ITA Texas Regionals, held Sept. 22-26 in Fort Worth. Zein posted five-consecutive wins before falling to teammate Malaika Rapolu in the singles final. Ovrootsky claimed four-straight victories before falling to Zein in a three-set thriller (6-7 [5-7], 7-6 [7-5], 7-5) in the semifinals.
Zein and Rapolu are currently competing in the ITF (International Tennis Federation) 25K event in Austin and have advanced to the doubles main draw semifinals (match set for 2 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center).
Since 1983, the ITA Women's All-American Championships have featured the nation's top NCAA Division I players and have been a pioneer in women's college tennis. The event has created milestones that over the years have directly influenced the popularity of women's collegiate tennis.
