Banks named FWAA Freshman All-American

The Football Writers Association of America honored Longhorns’ true freshman offensive lineman on Thursday.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas true freshman offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr. was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), the organization announced on Thursday. In addition to Thursday's recognition by the FWAA, Banks was also named a Freshman All-American by The Athletic and chosen to ESPN's True Freshman All-America team. A semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award and second-team All-Big 12 selection by both the league's coaches and the Associated Press, he also earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors as the Offensive Lineman of the Year and Offensive Freshman of the Year.
Banks played in and started all 13 games at left tackle for the Longhorns this season. The Humble, Texas native anchored an offensive line that helped Texas average 34.5 points per game, the 17th-highest scoring average among Power 5 programs, and 429.5 yards per game, the 23rd-best mark among Power 5 teams. Texas also averaged 6.38 yards per play, which currently ranked as the seventh-best average in program history. The Longhorns averaged 5.2 yards per carry (11th-best in UT history) and scored 29 rushing touchdowns this past season behind Banks and the offensive line. Banks also played a part in running back Bijan Robinson rushing for 1,580 rushing yards on the year, the seventh-most in a season in program history, as well as scoring 18 rushing touchdowns and notching nine 100-yard rushing games on the way to winning the Doak Walker Award and earning unanimous All-American distinction.
