The Longhorns overcame an 18-point deficit to improve to 3-1 in Big 12 play.
AUSTIN, Texas — Super senior Timmy Allen posted a team-high 17 points to lead No. 10/10 Texas (14-2, 3-1 Big 12) to a 79-75 victory against No. 17/17 TCU (13-3, 2-2 Big 12) on Wednesday night at Moody Center. The Longhorns trailed by as much as 18 points (40-22) with 2:57 left in the first half and overcame a 12-point deficit (61-49) with 9:36 remaining in the contest.
This marked the largest comeback for Texas since the Longhorns overcame a 22-point deficit (67-45) with 7:54 remaining during a 92-86 overtime home win against Oklahoma on Feb. 27, 2013. UT improved to 7-1 under the leadership of Interim Head Coach Rodney Terry.
Allen converted 8-of-13 field goals and added five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in 32 minutes. Graduate Sir'Jabari Rice had all 15 of his points in the second half and hit 8-of-9 free throws while adding six boards in 22 minutes. Senior Dylan Disu had a season-high 14 points (12 in the second half) while hitting a perfect 7-of-7 field goals and recorded three blocks in 23 minutes. Graduate Marcus Carr posted 11 points, seven assists against just one turnover and five rebounds in 35 minutes.
A back-and-forth opening six minutes saw five lead changes and one tie before a Xavier Corth layup gave TCU a 9-8 advantage with 14:03 remaining. A Brock Cunningham jumper trimmed the deficit to 13-10 at the 12:42 mark, but the Horned Frogs responded with an 8-1 spurt over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 21-11 lead following an Emanuel Miller layup with 10:22 left.
TCU increased its cushion to 18 points (40-22) after a Rondel Walker jumper at the 2:57 mark. The Longhorns went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 40-29 following a Disu put-back with 1:04 remaining, before the Horned Frogs used an Eddie Lampkin put-back with 34 seconds left to take a 42-29 lead into the break.
The Longhorns used a 12-5 spurt to open the second half and trimmed the margin to 47-41 after an Allen jumper at the 14:27 mark. Texas got within two points (49-47) following a pair of Rice free throws with 12:10 left, but TCU answered with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to build its lead to 61-49 after a Mike Miles Jr. layup at the 9:36 mark.
Texas responded with a 12-2 spurt of its own to cut the deficit to 63-61 following an Arterio Morris layup with 7:04 remaining. UT evened the score at 67-67 after a pair of Rice free throws at the 4:39 mark. The Longhorns grabbed a 76-73 lead on a Carr three-pointer with 1:01 remaining, and Rice hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final six seconds to seal the comeback win.
Texas returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 14 when it hosts Texas Tech. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
