Mia Scott earns unanimous selection to the 12-member squad
AUSTIN, Texas – With the 2023 season quickly approaching, the No. 14-ranked Texas Longhorns will head into the new campaign with another preseason recognition as sophomore Mia Scott was selected to the 2023 Big 12 Softball Preseason Team, the league announced Thursday morning.
Scott, who was a member of both the All-Big 12 Second Team and All-Freshman Team a year ago, is joined on the 12-member preseason all-conference squad by seven Oklahoma student-athletes, two from Oklahoma State and one from both Baylor and Kanas. She was one of seven to be unanimously selected.
Last season, Scott, who earned a spot on the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team, slashed .377/.443/.554 in 204 plate appearances throughout 64 starts on the diamond for Texas as the Longhorns earned their best finish in program history by advancing to the Women's College World Series Championship series. Her 26 stolen bases in 2022 were 10 more than the next closest teammate (Janae Jefferson and Alyssa Popelka).
Additionally, Scott, who was a NFCA All-Central Region Second Team selection in 2022, was second on the team in runs scored (62) and hits (77), while being one of three student-athletes (Jefferson, Mary Iakopo) to be credited with 100-or-more total bases as the Angleton, Texas native capped the season with 113.
Texas will open the regular season in less than 23 days when the Longhorns travel to Clearwater, Fla., to participate in the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic. The Longhorns will begin play on Friday, Feb. 10 against Missouri, before playing Northwestern. Games against Illinois and Tennessee await on Saturday, Feb. 11, before wrapping up the five-game slate on Sunday, Feb. 12 against Kentucky.
