Two second-half goals by the Sooners haunt the Longhorns in Norman
NORMAN, Okla. – It was either team's match after a scoreless first 45 minutes, but it was Oklahoma which took advantage of two loose soccer balls in its attacking 18-yard box during the second half to upend Texas, 2-0, on Thursday night.
Both Texas and Oklahoma's offenses went back-and-forth throughout the match's first 45-minute stanza as the two teams combined for 16 shots with Longhorn goalkeeper Mia Justus making two saves, while the Sooners' Olivia Ramey was credited with three. All three of Ramey's saves came during the match's first 11-and-a-half minutes after Lexi Missimo (4:42), Jilly Shimkin (9:02) and Hannah Waesch (11:26) were all credited with shots on goal.
The trio's would-be scoring opportunities highlighted a seven-minute time span that saw Texas take six shots. Shimkin took the Longhorn's final shot of the first half at the 28:50 mark.
Oklahoma came out to start the second half by forcing Justus to make a save on an Emma Hawkins shot less than five minutes in play. The Sooners broke the 0-0 tie when Muriel Kroflin's corner kick found the foot of Leonie Weber, whose attempted shot on goal was mishit but found Danielle Wolfe who put the ball in the back of the net.
Following a five-minute stretch that featured four Longhorn shots, including one from Missmo that forced another Ramey save, However, three minutes later, Ella Pappas scored an unassisted goal to extend the Sooners' lead.
Over the next 20 minutes, the Longhorns only managed two shots — one from Shimkin (77:45) and one from Missimo (88:06) — and three corner kicks (77:54, 82:03, 82:52).
