Soccer’s Missimo breaks program’s single-season goals record
10.15.2023 | Soccer
Lexi Missimo has now broken Texas’ three biggest single-season records in same season.
HOUSTON, Texas – On Friday, the Top Drawer Soccer publication described Lexi Missimo's 2023 season as "one of the best individual seasons in NCAA history." Two days later, she validated the comment throughout Texas' 6-1 win at Houston as the junior midfielder recorded her fifth brace and third two-assist performance on the season.
Missimo, who entered Sunday afternoon's match tied for the program's single-season goals record with 17, became the first student-athlete in program history to score 18 goals in a single season when she pushed the Longhorns' lead to 2-0 less than six minutes into the match. 27 minutes later, she fed Trinity Byars, who was breaking away from the Cougars' back line, a pass that resulted in the junior forward being fouled by Houston's goalkeeper inside the attacking 18-yard box thus giving UT a penalty kick opportunity that Missimo buried for her 19th goal on the season.

After Ashlyn Miller and Olivia Ahern connected in the 37th minute to give Texas a 4-0 lead, Missimo turned her offensive attention to her teammates as the Southlake native was credited with an assist on second-half goals by Jilly Shimkin and Byars, who earned her third brace of the season against the Cougars.
Through all the eye-popping offensive statistics for Missimo this season, Sunday's performance marked just the second time this campaign she has finished a match with multiple goals and assists: three goals and four assists against Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Sept. 7.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"I thought we possessed the ball a lot better today. Obviously, we were prepared to start quick and fast. I was pleased with our defensive work and organization and just overall effectiveness of the squad. I was really impressed with Charlotte Blümel for stepping into the starting lineup and playing a tremendous match. I thought we moved the ball well and were patient, too. Everything looked and felt good, because we were able to move the ball."
FROM JUNIOR MIDFIELDER LEXI MISSIMO
"I think this group knew we needed to come out and get this win, because it's no longer a win-or-lose scenario at this point. I think we showed up, played well and were able to put away our goals today. For me, personally, the difference between this season and last was just that I'm shooting the ball a lot more."
