No. 3/4 Football’s Brooks, Mitchell earn weekly Big 12 Conference awards

Sophomore RB Jonathon Brooks was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and junior WR Adonai Mitchell earned Newcomer of the Week honors.
IRVING, Texas – No. 3/4 Texas Football earned a pair of Big 12 Conference weekly awards as sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks was named the Offensive Player of the Week and junior wide receiver Adonai Mitchell was tabbed the Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. It marked the first career conference accolade for Brooks and the second newcomer nod this season for Mitchell.
Brooks, a native Hallettsville, Texas, rushed for a career-high 218 yards on 21 carries (10.4 ypc) and two touchdowns and added a 23-yard reception in the Longhorns' 40-14 victory over No. 24/24 Kansas on Saturday. Brooks' 218-yard output was the fourth-most for a Longhorn against a ranked opponent and the 22nd-most in any game in program history. He had a season-long 67-yard run to set up a Longhorn field goal in the second quarter then scored on a 54-yard run to close out the first drive of the second half. Brooks has surpassed 100 yards rushing in three-straight games and scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the last two.
Mitchell, a transfer from Georgia, established career highs with 10 receptions and 141 yards and had one touchdown in the win over the Jayhawks. His 10 receptions included four receptions of at least 17 yards and were the most for a Longhorn since Xavier Worthy had 15 against Kansas in 2021. On Texas' first scoring drive of the game, Mitchell hauled in three passes for 49 yards to help set up a Quinn Ewers 30-yard touchdown run.
The Longhorns will face No. 12/12 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, Oct. 7 in the Allstate Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will broadcast live on ABC.
