Soccer falls to Florida State, sees historic season come to end
11.19.2023 | Soccer
One win shy of tying the program’s single-season win record, Texas bows out of the NCAA Tournament in the Sweet Sixteen
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In order to be the best, you have to beat the best and Sunday afternoon, No. 1 Florida State proved its ranking by earning a 5-0 result over the Texas Longhorns, bringing to an end one of the best seasons in UT women's soccer history.
Florida State (19-0-1) pushed two goals — one by Beata Olsson and another by Onyi Echegini — passed Texas (17-5-2) goalkeeper Mia Justus, who made her return to the Seminole Soccer Complex this week after playing at Florida State in 2021 and 2022, within the match's first 10 minutes. Jordynn Dudley extended the home team's lead to three goals by converting a penalty kick opportunity in the 21st minute.
Taylor Huff made it 4-0, Florida State, with a goal less than five minutes into the second half, before Olivia Garcia capped the night by finding the back of the net at the 63rd-minute mark.
Of Texas' 12 shots on the night — only two back of Florida State's match total — only three were on target, though, with the Longhorns' best scoring opportunity coming at the 12:30 mark of the first half when a shot from Ashlyn Miller hit the top of the frame and went out of bounds.
Trinity Byars, Lauren Lapomarda and Holly Ward all had would-be scoring opportunities spoiled by Florida State goalkeeper Cristina Roque within a 12-minute span during the second half.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"Obviously, a disappointing result for us, but I don't want that to overshadow all the positive things our team accomplished this season, which was a list yards long. We just bumped into an incredibly impressive team in Florida State tonight. They were just rocking on all cylinders and just congratulations to (Florida State women's soccer head coach) Brian (Pensky) and his squad. It was a home match. You could feel the energy from the opening whistle and that's an incredibly talented team and, in my opinion, was the best team we've faced this season."
