Adonai Mitchell had a career day as Texas held off the Wildcats in overtime.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 7 Texas Football held off No. 23 Kansas State for a thrilling 33-30 overtime win on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns are now 8-1 to start the season for the first time since 2009.
After holding a comfortable 27-7 lead late in the third quarter, Texas found themselves in a thriller as Kansas State stormed back to tie the game at 30-30 and force overtime. Bert Auburn kicked a game-winning 42-yard field goal in the first overtime period and the Texas defense got a fourth down stop to secure the win.
Adonai Mitchell hauled in eight passes from QB Maalik Murphy for 149 receiving yards and one touchdown. Murphy finished 19-of-37 passing for 248 yards and one touchdown. Jonathan Brooks was the leading rusher with 149 yards and one touchdown, while CJ Baxter had 90 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Texas has now scored 30 or more points in every game this season, one of three programs to do so along with Michigan and Oregon. It's the first time in program history they have scored 30 or more points in nine straight games to open up the season.
Kansas State entered the game with the fifth-ranked rushing offense in the nation, averaging over 225 rushing yards per game. The Texas defense allowed only 33 total rushing yards for the game. It was the third consecutive game the defense allowed fewer than 100 rushing yards, the longest streak of allowing 100 yards or fewer since 2018. It was the fifth game this season Texas has allowed fewer than 100 rushing yards (Rice, Baylor, Houston, BYU).
