Track & Field wins six events in indoor season opener

Kedrick Smallwood breaks into all-time top performer list.
LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Texas track and field team left its season opener with six wins from the Commonwealth College Opener on Saturday afternoon.
The short hurdlers swept the opening events after Emelia Chatfield won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.19. Freshman Akala Garrett was the runner-up with her time of 8.33 in her first collegiate final.
Garrett later claimed the 500-meter run with her time of 1:12.30, the third-fastest time in Texas history behind Kennedy Simon (1:08.59) and Leslie Hardison (1:11.88).
On the men's side, sophomore Kendrick Smallwood won the 60m hurdles with his time of 7.85. He previously ran 7.81 in the prelims to climb to No. 6 on the Texas All-Time performer list. Kody Blackwood finished second with his time of 7.90, while Caleb Cavanaugh made his Texas debut with a third-place finish at 8.04.
Brian Herron later claimed first-place in the 500-meter with his time of 1:01.40 and Elijah Mosley finished second at 1:02.50.
The Texas men took seven of the top-10 times in the 300-meter dash led by sophomore John Rutledge who finished with a winning time of 33.41. Caleb Hulbin finished second at 33.70, Chris Brinkley in third at 33.97 and Blackwood rounded out the top-five at 34.08.
The women were led by freshman Micayah Holland in the 300m with her time of 38.30, while transfer Kenondra Davis finished just behind in second at 38.37. Freshman Lauren Lewis was fourth in 38.65.
Texas returns to Louisville on Jan. 12-13 for the Rod McCravy Invitational.
