Carr records a team-high 23 points and six assists during Monday’s defeat in Lubbock.
LUBBOCK, Texas — Graduate guard Marcus Carr registered a team-high 23 points, but No. 6/5 Texas (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) fell 74-67 at Texas Tech (14-12, 3-10 Big 12) on Monday night in United Supermarkets Arena. The Longhorns rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half to tie the score with just over four minutes remaining but could not take the lead down the stretch.
Carr converted 7-of-15 field goals, including 5-of-9 from three-point range, and added six assists against just one turnover in 38 minutes. Senior Dylan Disu tallied 11 points while converting 4-of-8 field goals, including a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point range, and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in 24 minutes. Texas, which entered the game leading the Big 12 in team free throw percentage (.761), hit just 10-of-17 from the stripe on Monday night.
The Red Raiders scored the game's first seven points, capped by a De'vion Harmon jumper at the 17:54 mark. Texas responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 10-7 lead following a Tyrese Hunter layup in transition with 14:40 remaining. The Longhorns increased their advantage to 15-11 after a Brock Cunningham three-pointer at the 12:33 mark, but back-to-back three-pointers from Harmon gave Texas Tech an 18-17 lead with 11:25 left.
A Carr jumper gave Texas a 28-26 advantage at the 4:03 mark, before the Red Raiders used an 8-2 spurt over the next 90 seconds to grab a 34-30 lead after a D'maurian Williams three-pointer with 2:39 remaining. A Carr three-pointer trimmed the deficit to 37-35 at the 1:34 mark, but Texas Tech closed the half on a 7-0 run capped by another Harmon three-pointer just before the buzzer to take a 44-35 cushion into the break.
The Red Raiders extended their advantage to 55-42 after a Kevin Obanor layup with 14:17 left. The Longhorns responded with a 12-4 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to cut the margin to 59-54 following an Arterio Morris dunk at the 11:49 mark. A Robert Jennings free throw gave Texas Tech a 62-54 cushion with 9:52 remaining, before Texas went on a 10-2 spurt over the next five-and-a-half minutes to even the score at 64-64 after a Disu three-pointer at the 4:16 mark.
The Red Raiders scored six straight points to build a 70-64 lead following an Obanor dunk with 2:28 remaining. UT trimmed the margin to 70-67 after a Disu free throw at the 1:03 mark, but Texas Tech sealed the contest by scoring the game's final four points.
Texas returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 18 when it hosts Oklahoma. Tip is set for 1 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be streamed nationally by Big12Now/ESPN+.
