Longhorns will take on Iowa State in the Big 12 Tournament championship game on Sunday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Texas women's basketball held Oklahoma State 19 points below their season scoring average as they advanced to the championship game of the Big 12 tournament with a 64-57 victory on Saturday at Municipal Auditorium.
Rori Harmon scored 11 points and added 10 assists and seven rebounds. Harmon become the first player in Big 12 Championship history to register 10 or more points, 10 or more assists and seven or more rebounds.
Shaylee Gonzales led Texas (25-8) with 17 points on 7-11 shooting and DeYona Gaston scored 14 points and added five rebounds. Shay Holle got Texas off to a good start with seven points in the first quarter and finished with 13 for the game.
The Longhorns forced Oklahoma State into 17 turnovers and held a 21-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Texas committed 11 turnovers.
Oklahoma State got within one at 34-33 at the 8:59 mark of the third quarter, but the Longhorns responded with a 13-2 run to go up 47-35 at the 3:51 mark of the third period.
In the fourth quarter the Longhorns limited the Cowgirls to 4-16 shooting to secure the victory.
Texas will take on Iowa State in the championship game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
Game Notes
• Texas improves to 25-8 for the season.
• The Longhorns improve to 21-0 on the season when they hold an opponent to 59 points or less. Texas is the only team in the country who has at least 20 games holding an opponent under 60 points and are undefeated in those games.
• Texas will be making their eighth Big 12 championship game appearance and will be seeking their third title. It is their second straight appearance in the championship game. The only time Texas faced Iowa State in the championship game was in 2000, which ISU won, 75-65.
• Rori Harmon dished out 10 assists, including her 200th of the season. Harmon became the seventh player in program history to record 200 assists for a season and the first since Edwina Brown in the 1999-00 season. Harmon now has 206 assists for the season.
• With their seven blocks in the game Texas brings their season total to 186, which moves them into fourth on their all-time list for single season blocks by the team.
• Texas led for 37:25 of game time against Oklahoma State.
• Big 12 Coach of the Year Vic Schaefer improves to 6-1 at the Big 12 Championships. Schaefer is now 40-8 in March in his last six seasons.
• Rori Harmon and Shay Holle both played all 40 minutes. For Harmon it is the 10th game this season she has played the entire game.
• DeYona Gaston notched her 19th game scoring in double figures and has reached double-digits in four of her last five.
• Shaylee Gonzales scored in double figures for the 23rd time this season. Gonzales now has 1,975 career points.
• Rori Harmon recorded double digit assists for the eighth game this season. Harmon secured her fifth double-double of the season.
• Shay Holle has reached double figure scoring in three of her last five games and seventh game of the season. Holle tied her career high in points with 13.
