No. 15/16 Women’s Basketball defeats East Carolina, 79-40, in NCAA First Round

AUSTIN, Texas. — Texas women's basketball improved to 22-0 on the season when holding an opponent to 59 points or less as they held East Carolina to 10-56 (17.9 percent) from the field on their way to a 79-40 win in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Saturday at Moody Center.
Shaylee Gonzales led Texas (26-9) with 20 points on 8-13 from the field and added six rebounds. Taylor Jones tallied 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots. Jones six blocked shots tie the Texas NCAA tournament game record for blocked shots.
DeYona Gaston notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Shay Holle contributed 10 points.
Rori Harmon dished out 12 assists as the Longhorns tallied 20 assists on 27 field goals.
The Longhorns used a 18-4 run in the first half to open up a 34-17 lead and led 45-24 at halftime. Texas outscored East Carolina 34-16 in the second half. From the second quarter through the end of the game, Texas outscored East Carolina, 56-25.

• Texas held ECU to single digits in three quarters. Texas has now held an opponent to single digits for a quarter, 26 times this season.
• The Longhorns held a 40-16 advantage in points in the paint and a 26-7 edge in bench points. Texas also held a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Texas forced ECU into 17 turnovers.
• Texas held ECU to 0-13 field goals in the fourth quarter.
