Former Texas Longhorn softball standout set to showcase her abilities in front of the USA Softball WNTSC
AUSTIN, TX – Former three-time NFCA All-Region selection Mary Iakopo has been invited to participate in a two-day U.S. Women's Fast Pitch Camp in preparation for selecting U.S. Women's National Team (WNT) rosters to compete in future events throughout the 2023 season, the USA Softball organization announced Friday morning.
The camp, which will be held at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Fla., from June 13 to June 15, will feature a 28-player invite list made up of current and former collegiate softball student-athletes representing 19 NCAA Division I universities across seven different athletic conferences. The Big 12 Conference (7) is tied with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for the most attendees.
Throughout the two-day camp, attendees will have the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in front of the USA Softball WNTSC, which will be tasked with selecting two 2023 U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) rosters: one to compete at the Japan All-Star Series in August and one to compete in the Pan American Games in November.
Each roster will be selected on a combination of camp performances as well as previous and ongoing evaluations of collegiate and professional athletes.
Iakopo, who was a MaxPreps First Team All-American and FloSoftball's No. 8 national prospect coming out of Los Alamitos High School in Carson, Calif., played for the USA Junior National Team in the summer of 2017, competing at the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla., as well as the WBSC World Championship in Clearwater, Fla.
In four seasons (2019-22) on the Forty Acres, Iakopo started 210 games while maintaining a .341 batting average and being credited with 195 hits and 121 runs scored. She connected for 42 home runs and drove in 171 runs and hit 31 doubles. She was selected to the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List on two occasions and was a two-time All-Big 12 performer. Softball America tabbed her a preseason second team All-American prior to the 2020 campaign.
