Hernandez places sixth on 3-meter at World Aquatics Championships

Hailey Hernandez will next compete for the United States at the World Cup Super Final in Germany this August.
FUKUOKA, Japan – Texas Women's Swimming and Diving's Hailey Hernandez finished sixth in the 3-meter springboard final at the World Aquatics Championships on Friday at the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool. It marked her second top-seven finish at the world meet after placing seventh on 1-meter. She was the top finisher for the United States on both 1-meter and 3-meter at the world championships.
Hernandez scored 307.15 points to place seventh, 52.35 points behind the champion, China's Chen Yiwen (359.50), while Chang Yani (341.50) of China was the runner-up and Canada's Pamela Ware (332.00) won bronze.
A native of Southlake, Texas, Hernandez moved from eighth to sixth on her final dive, scoring 63.00 points with a forward 2½ somersaults with one twist pike. She scored at least 60 points on four of her five dives, including 64.40 points with a back 2½ somersaults tuck on her third dive.
Hernandez improved throughout the event stages, opening the 3-meter with a 16th-place finish in the prelims and climbing to 12th in the semifinals before finishing sixth in the final.
She will now make her way to Berlin where she will take part in the United States training camp for the World Cup Super Final, which will occur August 4-6. Hernandez will compete on 3-meter for Team USA with the event taking place on August 6.
The World Aquatics Championships resume on Saturday, July 22 with the start of the swimming events. Saturday's slate of events will get underway at 8:30 p.m. CT and will include the prelims for the men's and women's 400-meter freestyle and 4x100-meter freestyle, the women's 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley, and men's 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley.
A total of 10 Longhorns will be swimming at the world championships in Japan. On the men's side, Carson Foster, Luke Hobson, David Johnston and Drew Kibler will be competing for the United States, Caspar Corbeau will swim for the Netherlands and Brayden Taivassalo will race for Canada. For the women, Lydia Jacoby, Jillian Cox and Erin Gemmell will swim for Team USA and Anna Elendt will compete for Germany.
Additionally, Texas Women's Swimming and Diving head coach Carol Capitani is serving as the head coach for the United States women's team and Texas Men's Swimming and Diving head coach Eddie Reese is an assistant coach for the United States.
A pair of swimmers who train in Austin will also be competing for the United States. Leah Smith, a captain for the American squad who trains with Capitani, and Shaine Casas, who trains with Reese, will be racing for Team USA.
