No. 15 Soccer cruises past Islanders, conquer exhibition matchup
08.12.2023 | Soccer
Five first-half goals set the tone in Texas’ tune-up match for the 2023 season.
AUSTIN, TX – With a returning all-conference midfielder, who led the NCAA in assists per match in 2022, it's quite easy for one to understand how the Texas offense flowed during the Longhorns' 6-0 win over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in Saturday night's exhibition match.
Lexi Missimo was credited with a match-high four assists, which would've tied her single-match career high set against Oklahoma on Sept. 26, 2021 had Saturday night's match been a regular season matchup, as four different Longhorn soccer student-athletes found the back of the net. Jilly Shimkin and Avery Clark led the way with two goals each — with Missimo assisting on all four — and Liz Worden accounted for another just three minutes before the end of the first half.
In total, Texas was credited with 16 shots — 10 of which were on target — to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi's eight, only two of which were on target.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"I thought we did a good job of creating a lot of good scoring opportunities with it being the opening match of the season and having been together as a team for only 11 days, so it was good to find the back of the net. I thought — as the head coach — there were loads of things we can clean up going into next Thursday against Long Beach State. But overall, I'm pleased. Having four people on the score sheet and all the assists that came along with them, I'm pleased for the group in that regard."
FROM JUNIOR LEXI MISSIMO
"I thought the team played great (tonight). I thought, defensively, we can clean it up a bit, but, offensively, we were able to put a lot of shots in the back of the net and that's all we can ask for. The match, overall, I thought it was great to see the new players stepping up and I thought the team played well. Again, there are some things we have to clean up, but, ultimately, I thought we did a pretty good job for the first match."
GAME NOTES
- Mia Justus, a Florida State transfer, wasted little time making an impact as a member of the Texas women's soccer program as the first-year Longhorn draw the starting assignment between the pipes and was credited with two saves in 90 minutes of game action.
- Among first-year Longhorns, Éabha O'Mahoney, Arianna Brothers, Abby Allen and Hannah Waesch all joined Justus in the Texas starting XI on Saturday night.
- Additional first-year members of the program Carly Montgomery, Avery Clark and Sarah Hornyak all played 12-or-more minutes throughout the match as substitutes off the bench.
- By the end of the night, Texas' Mia Justus and Lexi Missimo were the only student-athletes on either side to have played the entire 90-minute match.
UP NEXT
- Texas will now turn its attention to its season-opening match when the Longhorns travel to the West Coast to play Long Beach State at 9 p.m. CT on Thursday, August. 17. The match will be available to stream on ESPN+.
- Texas' first home match of the 2023 regular season is slated for 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 20, when the Longhorns and Rice Owls face off inside Mike A. Myers Stadium.
