Sophomore collects third career weekly league distinction
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas standout Amalia Villarreal was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Villarreal recorded her first career brace, delivering both of the Longhorns' goals in a 2-1 win over No. 13 Vanderbilt.
The sophomore's game-winning penalty kick with 10 seconds remaining marked the latest regulation goal to win a match in program history, besting the previous record with 17 tickets left scored by Abby Allen at Long Beach State on Aug. 17, 2023.
Meanwhile, Villarreal's first tally of the match earned the No. 7 spot on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays.
The East Lansing, Mich., native is the first Longhorn to garner weekly league distinction this year. Villarreal was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week twice in 2024.
