Former Longhorn claims her first career ITF 80K singles championship and will move into the WTA top 200.
BRASILIA, BRAZIL — Former University of Texas star Lulu Sun posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over world No. 164 Leolia Jeanjean in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) 80K singles championship match on Sunday morning at Estadio Arena Mane Garrincha. This marked Sun's first ITF 80K singles title, her fifth overall career ITF singles crown and her first since winning the 25K title in Lisbon, Portugal in July 2021.
With her run to the 80K singles title in Brasilia, Sun is expected to move into the top 200 in the updated World Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. She entered the week at No. 262 in the WTA rankings.
In Sunday's title match, Sun and Jeanjean split the first two sets before Sun won the opening two games of the third set. Trailing 3-1, Jeanjean held serve to trim the margin to 3-2 before Sun won the next three games to close out the match and secure the title.
Sun won a total of five matches in a six-day span (Aug. 8-13) in her run through the tournament's 32-player main draw. She posted straight-set victories in three of her five victories, and she posted wins over a trio of WTA top 280 players.
Sun concluded her career at Texas in 2021 after leading the Longhorns to a 31-1 record and the NCAA team title.
