Spizzirri advances to third round of U.S. Open Qualifying

Men’s Tennis senior Eliot Spizzirri downed ATP No. 122 Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets on Friday.
New York – Texas Men's Tennis senior Eliot Spizzirri advanced to the third round of U.S. Open Qualifying by downing ATP No. 122 Aleksandar Kovacevic, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday in New York.
With the win, Spizzirri advances to third round of qualifying for the first time and will now square off with ATP No. 155 Emilio Nava on Saturday on Court 5 at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
It marks the third U.S. Open qualifying victory of Spizzirri's career after he took his opening matches both this year and in 2021. He did not have an opportunity to receive a spot in the 2022 tournament due to injury.
Spizzirri claimed both breaks in the match, including in the opening game of the first set, and then for 5-4 in the second before serving it out. Not only did Spizzirri's serve go unbroken, but he completed the match without even providing a break opportunity for Kovacevic. The two had previously met in the round of 32 at the 2021 NCAA Singles Championships with Kovacevic winning, 6-1, 6-3, while playing for the University of Illinois.
