Junior TE Ja’Tavion Sanders caught five passes for a career-high 114 yards in Texas’ victory at Alabama.
NEW YORK – Texas Football junior tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week for his standout game at Alabama in week two, the Friends of John Mackey announced on Friday. It marks the second time in his career that Sanders has received the weekly honor.
In the Longhorns' 34-24 victory at the Crimson Tide, Sanders tallied in five receptions for a career-high 114 yards, including a career-best 50-yard reception that set up Texas' go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter. On the play, Sanders caught the pass at the Alabama 40-yard line and ran it 33 yards to the Tide 7-yard line. Quinn Ewers connected with Adonai Mitchell on the next play to give UT a 20-16 lead.
Sanders became the seventh Texas tight end to register a 100-yard receiving game in program history and the first since Jermichael Finley had 149 receiving yards against Oklahoma in 2007. His 114 yards receiving were the third-most for a tight end in program history, while his 50-yard reception was the 12th-longest.
The Longhorns return home to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to host Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on LHN.
