AUSTIN, Texas — No. 10/11 Texas (18-3, 5-3) fell to Oklahoma (12-6, 6-1) 91-87 on Wednesday at Moody Center.
Trailing by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter, senior Shay Holle drew a charge at the 9:11 mark and graduate Shaylee Gonzales forced a jump ball at the 8:15 marker to ignite the Texas faithful.
With the Longhorns down six with 2:09 remaining, junior Aaliyah Moore rebounded her own miss and scored the second chance layup to bring the Longhorns within four. Moments later, freshman Madison Booker connected on another Texas second chance bucket to cut the deficit to one.
Despite Texas' efforts, Oklahoma converted on their free throws to close the door for Texas.
The first half was a seesaw affair, with both teams trading blows. Oklahoma struck first by starting the game with an 8-2 lead, but the Horns would respond later in the first quarter with a 12-0 run to give Texas a 21-15 advantage.
With Texas up 23-17 heading into the second quarter, Oklahoma answered by revving up the pace and scoring a total of 28 points in the period. The Sooners turned over the Longhorns seven times in the quarter, but Texas would finish the half with an 8-2 run which included two converted and-ones from senior Taylor Jones and sophomore Amina Muhammad to narrow Oklahoma's halftime lead to 45-39.
Momentum began to build for the Horns at the end of the third quarter as Texas would score five points on their final possession of the period credit to a Holle 3-point made basket in which Jones was fouled with the ball already in the air, sending Jones to the charity stripe where she would make both bonus free throws.
Booker led the Longhorns in the scoring column with a career-high 29 points, followed by Holle's career-high 22 points on 10-12 shooting.
Up next, the Horns will face Cincinnati for the second time in team history at Moody Center on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 pm CT.
