AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate guard Max Abmas recorded a team-high 20 points, but No. 4/4 Houston (19-2, 6-2 Big 12) earned a hard-fought 76-72 overtime victory over Texas (14-7, 3-5 Big 12) before a sellout crowd at Moody Center on Monday night. The Longhorns played their fourth-consecutive game against an AP Top 25 opponent and lost in Moody Center for the first time in a contest against a ranked foe (7-1 in Moody against AP Top 25 teams).
Abmas converted 6-of-15 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws to go along with five assists and five rebounds in a season-high 43 minutes. He moved into sole possession of the No. 14 spot (passed Alfredrick Hughes of Loyola Chicago at 2,914) on the NCAA all-time Division I career scoring list with 2,934 points in 144 games.
Sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell posted his seventh double-double of the season with 16 points (7-13 FG) and a game-high 10 rebounds in 33 minutes. Graduate forward Dylan Disu added 14 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots in a season-best 36 minutes.
The opening half featured seven lead changes and one tie. A Kadin Shedrick jumper gave the Longhorns a 10-9 advantage at the 13:27 mark, but the Cougars went on a 13-2 spurt over the next seven minutes to build a 22-12 cushion following a J'wan Roberts layup with 6:39 remaining. Houston extended the margin to as much as 12 points (33-21) after a Jamal Shead jumper at the 1:52 mark, before a Disu jumper and Shedrick dunk trimmed the deficit to 33-25 at the half.
Houston increased its cushion to 11 points (41-30) following a Roberts layup at the 18:02 mark. The Longhorns responded with a 10-2 run over the next three-plus minutes to cut the gap to 43-40 after a Tyrese Hunter three-pointer with 14:42 remaining. A Shead layup gave the Cougars a 46-42 advantage at the 11:32 mark, before Texas went on a 12-2 to grab a 54-48 lead after a Disu three-pointer with 8:23 left.
Houston answered by scoring nine straight points to take a 57-54 advantage following an Emanuel Sharp three-pointer at the 6:25 mark. A Shead jumper gave the Cougars a 59-56 cushion with 5:40 left, before the Longhorns used a 7-0 spurt to build a 63-59 advantage after a pair of Chendall Weaver free throws at the 2:14 mark. Houston rallied to even the score at 65-65 following a Roberts putback with 1:25 remaining, and both teams were held scoreless to force the overtime session.
In the extra period, the Cougars built a 70-67 advantage after a Joseph Tugler putback at the 1:27 mark, before an Abmas three-point play tied the score at 70-70 with 1:07 left. Houston scored four straight points to take a 74-70 lead following a pair of Sharpe free throws with 10 seconds remaining, and Sharpe added another pair of free throws with 1.8 seconds left to seal the victory.
Texas returns to the court when it travels to face No. 25/25 TCU on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
