In Memoriam: Walter H. McNew

The two-time All-American McNew passed away at 88 years old
(November 1, 1935 – December 18, 2023)
Walter H. McNew, the only Texas Cross Country National Champion, passed away in later December. He was 88.
McNew was a two-time cross country All-American in 1956 and 1957, including his first-place finish at the 1956 NCAA Cross Country Championship. McNew is one of just five Longhorns to be a two-time Cross Country All American when he was also the team captain. The Pecos, Texas, native was later inducted into the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
After UT, McNew joined the Army in 1960 and retired after 35 years in the Army Reserves as a Colonel. After the Army, McNew was the Executive Director of Big Brothers and Sisters of Dallas for 30 years and retired in 94. Retirement led to McNew being the supervisor of social services for the Salvation Army.
His act of service didn't stop in the Army as McNew later volunteered with Meals on Wheels, church, was a reading tutor and was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Richardson.
McNew is survived by his wide of 65 years, Shirley Ford McNew, brother Brad and two daughters – Melissa Baker and Melinda Betty, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
McNew was buried at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
