Texas will head into the 2024 SEC Soccer Tournament having won four of last five matches
ATHENS, Ga. – In a regular season finale over 1,000 miles away from Austin, The University of Texas women's soccer program is bringing back three points to the Lone Star State following Sunday's 1-0 win at Georgia.
Playing in front of more than 1,000 fans on the road for the fifth time this season, head coach Angela Kelly and her squad were more than prepared as the Longhorn offense was credited with 14 shot attempts, marking the eighth straight match with 10-or-more shot attempts, against one of the league's top goalkeepers in Georgia's Jordan Brown.
And it was Lexi Missimo's shot during the 60th minute that went through the hands of Brown and found the back of the net to push Texas ahead 1-0 and provided all the different the Longhorns needed on the afternoon to seal their sixth conference win on the season.
Missimo's goal was setup by Amalia Villarreal winning the ball away from a Georgia defender, then dribbled into the 18-yard box before finding Missimo along the left edge of the 6-yard box. Missimo shot the ball towards Brown, who was unable to handle the loose ball in the air and allowed it to go past her for Missimo's 12th goal on the season and Villarreal's eighth assist this season.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"I'm just really proud of the squad (for how they played today). It's really, really hard to win in this conference and it's just that much harder to win on the road, especially on a double weekend. I'm not only proud of this group, but I'm also happy to know how coachable they are and that was evident today. The effort and determination today were outstanding. They followed the plan and understood the information we provided."
FROM DEFENDER MADISON HAUGEN
"It was great being back (at Georgia) – I mean, I loved my time here – but to get a win here was super amazing. I started my career (in Athens, Ga.) and I ended my last regular season here, too, so I'm just pumped to be a part of this program here at Texas and get this win today."
