Longhorns open Margueritte Bates era with back-to-back shutouts
PITTSBURGH — Amalia Villarreal delivered from the penalty spot and Bayliss Flynn recorded her second consecutive clean sheet to lead Texas to a 1-0 win over Pitt at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Sunday afternoon.
"Our mental and physical toughness was tested today," head coach Margueritte Bates said. "Most importantly, we found a way to win and played with incredible grit and determination. We improved our execution and individual competitiveness from our first match to today. I was pleased with our attacking transition, and we did enough in our box defending to get the result."
With the match scoreless late in the second half, the Longhorns (2-0-0) earned a corner kick in the 74th minute. Villarreal lofted a service toward the back post for Hannah Tate, who flicked the ball toward the frame. The Panthers' backline blocked Tate's attempt, but following video review, Pitt (1-1-0) was whistled for a handball.
Villarreal stepped to the spot and converted, burying her attempt into the bottom-left corner to push Texas ahead. The junior has now scored in four straight matches, dating back to last season.
While Villarreal provided the game-winning tally, Flynn and the Longhorns' defense preserved the shutout victory.
The 5-foot-6 netminder totaled six saves to keep the Panthers off the board, highlighted by a pair of diving stops in the 48th and 64th minutes, respectively.
"Bayliss did a great job with her presence and leadership in goal," Bates said. "She managed the space behind her backline very well and came up big when we needed her. As a staff, we are very proud of her performance today."
Flynn became the first Texas goalkeeper with back-to-back clean sheets in their first two starts as a Longhorn in at least 20 years.
Texas continues its road swing Thursday when the Longhorns face Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. CT / 7 p.m. MT.
