Men’s Tennis’s Legout named SEC MVP of Big 12/SEC Challenge

Freshman Timo Legout finished his first tournament as a Longhorn with a 6-0 combined singles and doubles record as Texas closed with four wins on the final day.
Waco, Texas – Texas Men's Tennis freshman Timo Legout was named the SEC MVP of the Big 12/SEC Challenge at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco on Sunday. Legout finished his first tournament as a Longhorn with a 6-0 combined singles and doubles record as Texas closed with four wins on the final day. The Longhorns completed the tournament with a 13-5 total record, which was tied with Baylor for the best in the field.
On Sunday, Texas took three of four singles matches against players from Baylor, plus one in doubles against Oklahoma State.
Starting in doubles, Legout and senior Pierre-Yves Bailly earned their third doubles victory of the tournament with an 8-4 victory over Alessio Basile and Thomas Gadecki of the Cowboys. In the other doubles contest, sophomore Lucas Brown and freshman Evan Burnett fell, 8-2, to Ian Brack and Derek Pham of OSU.
Later in the day, three Texas players earned singles wins, led by Legout's third ranked victory in as many matches of his UT career when he downed No. 49 Zsombor Velcz of Baylor, 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, No. 46 Bailly defeated Oskar Brostrom, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 124 Brown topped Louis Bowden, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Burnett picked up a hard-fought first-set tiebreaker Quintan van Wijk, before van Wijk rallied for the second and third sets, 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-2.
The tournament featured individual play with members of schools of the SEC, including Texas, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Texas A&M, playing those of the Big 12, including Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. The Big 12 came out just ahead of the SEC in the final total of matches won, 47-43.
