Longhorns earn women’s division championship, combine with Texas men’s golf for university division championship.
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. — It came down to the final hole for the No. 4 Texas women's golf team as they captured the NB3 Collegiate Match Play Championship on Wednesday at Twin Warriors Golf Club. The women's team combined with the Texas men's golf team to win the university championship.
Lauren Kim provided the Longhorns an early spark as she won three of her first four holes and went on to secure a point for Texas with a 4&3 win. Kim made five birdies on the day and finished the event with 15 birdies and two eagles.
Selina Liao won five holes in her match and provided the Longhorns a key half point as she tied her match against Andrea Revuelta of Stanford.
The women's championship came down to the final group with Cindy Hsu against Paula Martin Sampedro. The match was tied through 13 holes and Hsu won the 14th and 15th holes to go 2-up. Martin Sampedro came back to win 16 and 17 and it all came down to the 400-yard par-4 18th hole. Needing only to tie the match, Hsu's birdie putt from about 40 feet away came to within a foot of the hole and after Martin Sampedro missed her birdie putt the Longhorns came away with the championship.
Texas and Stanford will see each other again soon as the Longhorns travel to Palto Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Intercollegiate Oct. 18-20.
Texas Head Coach Laura Ianello
"This was a great week for the men's and women's golf programs at Texas. This was a co-event that we won medalist in the women's divison and then we won the combined championship as well. We had a good test playing against the No. 1 team in the country in Stanford. I was really proud of Lauren Kim for winning two and a half points and Cindy Hsu came up big beating great players consistently. Selina Liao finishing in the dark yesterday winning her match, there were a lot of good things. We made a lot of birdies and our short game and putting were really sharp. Looking forward to fine-tuning a few things before the Stanford Intercollegiate. I'm super proud of these young women that represent the burnt orange."
