ESTERO, Fla. — Madison Booker scored 11 of the first 13 points for the Texas women's basketball team as they beat New Mexico State 90-50 on Friday at Hertz Arena in their opening game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Madison Booker and Taylor Jones combined for 41 points on 16-of-21 shooting for Texas as Booker recorded 21 points in 23 minutes and Jones netted 20 points in 16 minutes of action. Six other players scored at least five points for Texas.
The Longhorns used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to go up 19-8 at the two minute mark of the period. Laila Phelia sparked a 9-0 run for Texas with a bucket and a foul. She converted the free-throw for a three-point play to put the Longhorns up 34-20 at the 4:51 mark of the second quarter and the Longhorns went into halftime up 41-25 on a last second 3-pointer by Booker.
Taylor Jones scored nine points in the third quarter for the Longhorns as they took a 64-39 lead into the final period. The Longhorns put the game away as they outscored New Mexico State 26-11 in the fourth quarter. In all Jones scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half for Texas.
12 different Texas players saw the floor and 11 of them found the scoring column. The Longhorns got excellent production from their bench with 37 points from their reserve players.
The Longhorns continue play in the Gulf Coast Showcase against Butler on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Postgame Notes:
- Texas improved to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in the all-time series against New Mexico State.
- Madison Booker led Texas with 21 points, her 16th career game with 20 or more points. Booker shot 8-of-10 from the field and went 3-of-3 from 3-point range.
- Texas forced 25 New Mexico State turnovers and converted those into 37 points off turnovers.
- The Longhorns held a 38-21 rebounding advantage over New Mexico State and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, which they converted into a 25-4 advantage in second chance points.
- The Longhorns scored 44 points in the paint.
- Texas converted 22-of-31 (71 percent) from the free-throw line.
- The Longhorns shot 32-of-60 (53.3 percent) from the field for the game.
- Rori Harmon led Texas with five assists to increase her career total to 532. Harmon is five assists from moving into third on the Texas all-time list for career assists.
- The Longhorns held New Mexico State under 40 percent shooting from the field.
