Johnson paces six Longhorns in double-figure scoring with a game-high 28 points in Friday’s win.
AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman guard Tre Johnson recorded a game-high 28 points to lead No. 19/19 Texas (1-1) to a 90-59 victory over Houston Christian (1-1) on Friday night in front of a crowd of 10,993 inside Moody Center. The Longhorns posted their 1,900th all-time victory in program history and won their 23rd consecutive home opener.
Johnson paced six Texas players in double-figure scoring, as the Longhorns improved to 18-0 all-time in non-conference contests at Moody. He converted 11-of-18 field goals, including 5-of-8 threes, and added three assists against just one turnover in 30 minutes. Senior forward Arthur Kaluma registered his ninth collegiate double-double with 15 points (7-10 FG) and game-high 10 rebounds in 28 minutes, and junior guard Chendall Weaver tallied 12 points (5-9 FG), five boards, three assists and a game-high three steals in 31 minutes.
Junior guard Jordan Pope posted 11 points (5-11 FG) in 21 minutes, while graduate forward Kadin Shedrick recorded 10 points (3-3 FG, 4-4 FT), six boards and a game-high four blocked shots in 27 minutes. Graduate forward Jayson Kent added 10 points (3-5 FG, 2-3 threes) and five rebounds (four offensive) in 18 minutes.
Texas, which never trailed in the contest, jumped out to an 18-11 advantage following a Kent three-pointer at the 14:13 mark. Another Kent three-pointer gave the Longhorns a 25-16 cushion with 10:25 left, but the Huskies used an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to trim the deficit to 27-24 after an Elijah Brooks three-point play at the 7:26 mark. A Julian Mackey layup brought HCU to within 37-34 with 2:08 remaining, before Texas scored five of the final six points of the half to take a 42-35 advantage into the break.
The Longhorns opened the second half with a 12-0 run to build a 54-35 cushion following a Johnson three-pointer at the 17:24 mark. After a Brooks layup cut the lead to 54-37 with 16:24 left, Texas responded with another 12-0 run to grab a 66-37 advantage following a Kaluma jumper at the 13:32 mark. The margin did not dip below 21 points for the remainder of the contest.
Texas registered a 48-24 scoring margin in the second half. The Longhorns converted 54.3-percent (19-35) from the floor during the final 20 minutes while holding HCU to 25.9-percent (7-27) shooting from the field, including a 29.4-percent mark (5-17) from three-point range.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Chicago State on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be streamed by SEC Network+.
