Disu posts a game-high 27 points while hitting a career-best 7-of-10 from three-point range on Saturday in Moody Center.
AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate forward Dylan Disu registered a game-high 27 points while converting a collegiate career-best 7-of-10 from three-point range to lead Texas (16-8, 5-6 Big 12) to a 94-58 victory over West Virginia (8-15, 3-7 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon in Moody Center. The Longhorns set a school team record for a Big 12 Conference game with 28 assists and tied a season low with just five turnovers during the win.
Disu hit 10-of-16 field goals, including 7-of-10 from three-point range, and added three assists without a turnover, two steals and one blocked shot in 26 minutes. His previous high for three-pointers made in a game was five, a feat he accomplished while playing for Vanderbilt against Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 13, 2020.
Disu had 19 points (7-7 FG, 5-5 threes) in only 13 minutes of action in the first half. He became the sixth UT player to record a perfect half from three-point range with a minimum of five attempts, and he became just the fourth player in school history to be perfect from the floor in a single half with at least seven field goals attempted.
All five Texas starters scored in double figures during Saturday's victory. Junior Tyrese Hunter had 19 points (8-12 FG, 3-4 threes), tied a season high with seven assists against just one turnover and added five boards and two steals in 28 minutes. Sophomore Chendall Weaver posted 13 points (4-5 FG, 5-6 FT), six rebounds and a season-high four assists in 30 minutes, while sophomore Dillon Mitchell recorded 12 points, eight boards, four assists, two steals and two blocks in 28 minutes.
Graduate guard Max Abmas registered 19 points (5-12 threes), set a season high with nine assists without committing a turnover and tied his season high with six rebounds in 31 minutes. Abmas moved into the No. 12 spot on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 2,987 points, passing the legendary Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati (2,973).
West Virginia evened the score at 7-7 following a three-pointer by Raequan Battle at the 17:42 mark. Texas went on an 11-0 run over the next 81 seconds to build an 18-7 advantage following an Abmas three-pointer with 16:21 remaining.
The Mountaineers got within single digits at 18-9 after a Noah Farrakhan jumper at the 15:20 mark, before the Longhorns responded with a 14-5 spurt over the next five-and-a-half minutes to grab a 32-14 cushion following a Disu three-pointer with 9:26 left. Texas increased the margin to as much as 27 points (55-28) after an Abmas three-pointer at the 1:15 mark, before West Virginia trimmed the deficit to 55-30 at the break. The Longhorns recorded 17 assists against just two turnovers and converted 65.7-percent (23-35) from the floor, including an 8-of-16 (.500) mark from three-point range, in the opening 20 minutes.
The Mountaineers cut the gap to 24 points (64-40) after a Pat Suemnick free throw with 12:59 remaining, but that was as close as West Virginia would get the rest of the way. Texas answered with a 10-1 spurt over the next three-and-a-half minutes to build a 74-41 cushion following a pair of Weaver free throws at the 9:03 mark. The Longhorns eventually increased the margin to as much as 43 points (90-47) after a Hunter three-pointer with 3:16 left.
Texas is back in action when it travels to face No. 5/5 Houston on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tip is scheduled for 12 p.m. Central at the Fertitta Center in Houston, and the game will be televised nationally by CBS.
