Hunter and Mitchell pace the Longhorns with 12 points each on Saturday in Lawrence.
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Junior guard Tyrese Hunter and sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell each posted 12 points, but Texas (17-10, 6-8 Big 12) dropped an 86-67 decision at No. 9/10 Kansas (21-6, 9-5 Big 12) on Saturday evening in Allen Fieldhouse. The Longhorns had won five of the previous meeting against the Jayhawks entering Saturday's contest.
Hunter converted 4-of-8 field goals, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and added four assists and two steals in 34 minutes. Mitchell hit 6-of-10 field goals and grabbed four rebounds while adding two assists and two steals in 20 minutes. Graduate guard Ithiel Horton also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points (2-5 threes, 4-6 FT) in 27 minutes.
Kansas jumped out to an 8-2 advantage after a pair of Johnny Furphy throws at the 16:39 mark. The Longhorns responded with an 8-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to grab a 10-8 lead following a Dylan Disu three-pointer with 14:06 left. Texas pulled to within 16-15 after a pair of Horton free throws at the 11:11 mark, but the Jayhawks used a 12-0 spurt over the next four minutes to build a 28-15 cushion following a Hunter Dickinson jumper with 7:06 remaining.
Texas scored four straight points to cut the gap to 28-19 after a Mitchell jumper at the 6:08 mark. Kansas then closed the half on a 17-6 run over the final 5:52 to take a 45-25 advantage into the break.
The Jayhawks opened the second half with a Dickinson jumper to grab a 47-25 cushion with 18:31 left. Texas responded with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to trim the deficit to 47-34 following a Horton three-pointer at the 15:48 mark. A Disu three-pointer pulled the Longhorns to within 62-45 with 9:59 remaining, but Kansas scored seven straight points to increase its advantage to 69-45 after a Dajuan Harris Jr. layup at the 8:41 mark. The Longhorns cut the margin to 15 points (79-64) following a Max Abmas three-pointer with 3:08 left, but that was as close as Texas could get the rest of the way.
Texas returns to the court when it travels to face No. 23/23 Texas Tech on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
