Disu posts a game-high 21 points, and Abmas adds 18 to lead the Longhorns to an impressive road win on Tuesday.
LUBBOCK, Texas — Graduate forward Dylan Disu recorded a game-high 21 points and graduate guard Max Abmas added 18 points to lead Texas (18-10, 7-8 Big 12) to an impressive 81-69 victory at Texas Tech (19-9, 8-7 Big 12) on Tuesday night before a sellout crowd at United Supermarkets Arena. The Longhorns scored the game's opening six points and never trailed or were tied during the contest.
Defense and rebounding proved to be keys in Tuesday's win. Texas held the Red Raiders to 35.6-percent (21-59) field goal shooting, including a 31.8-percent mark (7-22) from three-point range, and claimed a plus-14 rebound margin (44-30).
Disu converted 9-of-16 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws while adding six rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes. Abmas hit 4-of-12 from three-point range and 4-of-4 free throws and tallied four assists without a turnover in 30 minutes. Abmas moved into the No. 11 spot on the NCAA Division I men's all-time scoring list with 3,025 points, passing Hersey Hawkins of Bradley (3,008).
Sophomore guard Chendall Weaver tied his season high with 15 points while setting his collegiate career high in free throws made (9-11) and grabbed a season-best eight rebounds in 31 minutes. Graduate forward Kadin Shedrick recorded 10 points (5-6 FG), six rebounds and two blocks in just eight minutes of action.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 6-0 advantage following a Disu jumper at the 17:38 mark. Texas Tech scored four straight points to cut the gap to 6-4 after a Darrion Williams jumper with 16:30 remaining, but Texas answered with an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to build a 14-4 lead following an Abmas jumper at the 12:34 mark. A Weaver layup gave the Longhorns a 19-9 cushion with 8:50 left, but the Red Raiders scored five straight points to trim the deficit to 19-14 following an Eemeli Yalaho put-back at the 7:30 mark.
Texas responded with an 11-1 run over the next three-plus minutes to increase their advantage to 30-15 after a Disu dunk with 4:19 remaining. The margin reached 20 points (37-17) after a Disu jumper at the 2:31 mark, and an Abmas three-pointer with four seconds left gave the Longhorns a 47-23 cushion heading into the break. Texas converted 60-percent (18-30) from the floor while holding the Red Raiders to 24.2-percent (8-33) shooting, including a 1-of-10 (.100) mark from three-point range, in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas Tech cut the deficit to 49-28 after a Pop Isaacs layup at the 18:42 mark. Texas responded with an 8-0 spurt over the next 90 seconds to build a 57-28 advantage following a Disu layup with 17:01 remaining.
The margin stayed above 20 points until Isaacs knocked down a pair of free throws to pull the Red Raiders to within 67-48 at the 9:40 mark. Texas Tech managed to trim the gap to 15 points (75-60) after a Joe Touissaint layup with 3:50 left. That was as close as the Red Raiders could get until Chance McMillian drained a three-pointer with five seconds left.
Texas is back in action when it hosts Oklahoma State on Saturday, March 2. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
