Disu records a team-high 17 points, and Weaver adds a season-high 16 to lead the Longhorns on Saturday.
AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate forward Dylan Disu posted a team-high 17 points and tied his collegiate career high with five assists, while sophomore guard Chendall Weaver added a season-high 16 points to pace Texas (19-10, 8-8 Big 12) to an 81-65 win over Oklahoma State (12-17, 4-12 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon in Moody Center. The contest was tied at 52-52 with 12:20 remaining, before the Longhorns closed the game on a 29-13 run to seal the victory.
Disu converted 7-of-16 field goals and tallied five assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal in 32 minutes. Weaver hit a collegiate career-best 7-of-12 field goals and grabbed four rebounds in 22 minutes, while graduate guard Max Abmas posted 15 points (5-10 FG, 3-6 threes), four assists and tied his season high with three steals in 34 minutes. Abmas became the fifth player in NCAA Division I men's history to reach 500 career three-pointers made, as he has now converted 501 three-pointers in 152 games.
Texas received a complete team effort en route to the victory. The Longhorns posted a 34-8 advantage in bench scoring and registered a 39-28 rebound margin, including a 17-8 edge on the offensive glass which led to a 22-1 advantage in second-chance points.
Oklahoma State took a 5-4 lead after a Jamyron Keller three-pointer at the 16:57 mark, before the Longhorns scored five straight points to grab a 9-5 advantage following a Disu three-pointer with 15:18 remaining. An Abmas three-pointer gave Texas a 12-7 cushion at the 13:10 mark, but the Cowboys scored six straight points to take a 13-12 lead after a Quion Williams layup with 12:05 left. Oklahoma State evened the score at 18-18 following a John-Michael Wright three-pointer at the 10:57 mark, before the Longhorns went on an 11-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to build a 29-18 advantage after a Weaver three-point play with 7:01 left.
The Cowboys trimmed the margin to 33-30 following three free throws from Javon Small at the 3:46 mark, and Texas used a 10-3 spurt to grab a 43-33 cushion after an Abmas three-pointer with 48 seconds left. Oklahoma State cut the gap to 43-36 on a three-point play by Small, before a Disu jumper with 10 seconds left gave the Longhorns a 45-36 lead heading into the break. Texas converted 56.7-percent (17-30) from the floor, including a 5-of-9 (.556) mark from three-point range, and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
A Disu layup increased the margin to 11 points (47-36) at the 17:53 mark, but Oklahoma State used a 16-5 spurt over the next five-plus minutes to tie the score at 52-52 following a Small jumper with 12:20 remaining. On the ensuing possession, a three-pointer from Brock Cunningham started a 14-0 run by the Longhorns over a span of two-and-a-half minutes that gave the Longhorns a 66-52 cushion after a Disu jumper at the 9:18 mark. The Cowboys closed to within 68-57 following a John-Michael Wright three-pointer with 7:13 left, before Texas answered with a 9-1 spurt over the next three-and-a-half minutes to build a 77-58 lead after a Weaver dunk at the 3:44 mark.
Texas returns to the court when it travels to face No. 15/14 Baylor on Monday, March 4. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Foster Pavilion, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
