Gibson, Hernandez advance to Women’s Springboard final at U.S. Olympic Trials

Alison Gibson in second and Hailey Hernandez in ninth place entering Saturday night’s final.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Former University of Texas star Alison Gibson and rising senior Hailey Hernandez both advanced to the Women's Springboard final on Thursday evening at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Diving at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Gibson will enter Saturday's final in second place, while Hernandez is in the ninth spot following the semifinal round. The top 12 qualifiers among the field of 17 advance to Saturday's final.
The top two finishers in the men's and women's individual springboard events at the U.S. Olympic Trials earn automatic spots on the official Team USA roster. Scores from the semifinals will be carried over to the final, which will be contested on Saturday night (6 p.m. CT on NBC).
During the afternoon semifinals, Gibson posted a cumulative five-dive score of 317.70 to rest in second place. Sarah Bacon holds the lead after the semifinals at 341.25, and Sophie Verzyl is in third at 313.55. Hernandez placed ninth after the semifinals at 283.80.
Gibson's semifinal session was highlighted by a score of 67.50 on her fourth-round dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault pike (305B), and a score of 69.70 on her fifth and final dive of the night, a forward 2 ½ somersault 2 twist pike (5154B). Hernandez posted a score of 66.00 on her fifth and final dive of the session, a forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike (5152B).
During the five dives of the morning preliminary rounds, Hernandez posted a score of 293.10 to finish fifth while Gibson placed ninth at 275.25. Bacon posted the top score in the prelims at 300.85 and was followed closely by Kristen Hayden in second at 300.60 and Verzyl in third at 300.45. Scores from the morning's preliminary rounds were not carried over to the afternoon's semifinals.
