Women's Swimming's Jillian Cox, Kate Hurst place third-sixth in 800 free final at U.S. Olympic Trials

Current Longhorns Erin Gemmell and Grace Cooper tie for 12th in the 50 free semifinal on Saturday night.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — University of Texas rising sophomore Jillian Cox recorded a third-place finish in the final of the 800-meter freestyle on Saturday night at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Incoming freshman Kate Hurst finished sixth in the 800 free final.
The top finisher in the individual swimming events at the U.S. Olympic Trials earns an automatic spot on the official Team USA roster, while the runner-up is considered a near lock to make the team as well.
Katie Ledecky (8:14.12) and Paige Madden (8:20.71) went one-two in Saturday's 800 free final. Cox placed third in a time of 8:22.97, and Hurst finished sixth with a mark of 8:28.92.
During Saturday evening's semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle, rising sophomore Erin Gemmell and rising senior Grace Cooper tied for 12th place with a time of 25.00. Gretchen Walsh posted the top time of the semifinals in 24.06.
In Saturday morning's prelims, a pair of current Longhorns advanced to the semifinals in the 50-meter freestyle. Cooper posted the 10th-fastest time of the morning with a mark of 24.91, while Gemmell tied for 13th in a time of 25.13.
