Women's Swimming's Gemmell anchors USA to silver in 4x200 free relay at Paris Olympics

Rising sophomore Erin Gemmell swam the anchor leg for Team USA in Thursday night’s final.
PARIS, France — University of Texas rising sophomore Erin Gemmell earned a silver medal for Team USA in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay final on Thursday evening at the Paris Olympic Games inside the Paris La Defense Arena.
During Thursday night's final, Gemmell swam the anchor leg for Team USA as the American squad posted a time of 7:40.86 to finish in second place. Australia earned the gold medal in an Olympic record time of 7:38.08, while China claimed bronze with a mark of 7:42.34. Gemmell tallied an impressive split of 1:55.40 on her anchor leg in the final.
The University of Texas has now registered a combined eight medals (one gold, four silver, three bronze) from its Men's and Women's Swimming teams through the first six days of competition at the Paris Games.
In Thursday morning's prelims, Gemmell swam the second leg for Team USA in the 4x200 free relay heats and led her quartet to the fourth-fastest time of the prelims with a mark of 7:52.72. Gemmell posted the fastest split for Team USA with a mark of 1:56.77 during her second leg of the prelims.
