Trinity Byars becomes the first Texas Longhorn to be named a SEC Player of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It didn't take long for those new to following Texas women's soccer to see what Trinity Byars is capable of on the pitch as, in just the second week of the 2024 season, the Longhorn forward was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Byars' performance in 163 minutes of action throughout two matches last week was highlighted by a career outing in her return to her hometown on Thursday, Aug. 22, when the Richardson, Texas native scored a career-high four goals and totaled a career-high nine points — after being credited with an assist on a first-half goal by Avery Clark — in Texas' 6-3 win at SMU. She became just the fifth student-athlete in program history to record a four-goal match, the first since Lexi Missimo accomplished the feat against UTRGV during the 2021 campaign.
In less than 25 minutes in the first half of the week-opening match, Byars had already turned in a then-hat trick after scoring in the ninth minute — assisted by Madison Haugen, Missimo — then the twenty-ninth — assisted by Jilly Shimkin, Amalia Villarreal — and then an unassisted goal at the 33-minute mark. She capped her four-goal outing with her fifth goal on the season with less than five minutes left in the match.
As a result of her four-goal outing against the Mustangs, Byars became the first student-athlete in program history to score 50-or-more goals during their career on the Forty Acres. She also became the NCAA's active leader in career goals with 52 after her haul in Dallas.
