Freshman Carmen Herea had won six-straight matches to emerge from prequalifying, but fell in the second round of the main draw on Thursday.
Cary, N.C. – Texas Women's Tennis closed play at the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday in Cary, N.C., as freshman Carmen Herea fell in the second round of the singles main draw.
Herea had won six-straight matches to emerge from prequalifying, but came up short to 10 seed No. 12 Julia Fliegner of Michigan, 7-5, 6-4. Fliegner broke first for a 3-1 lead, but Herea won back-to-back deuce-point games to even it. Herea was then the next to break, which they did on deuce on another deuce point for a 5-4 lead. However, Fliegner closed the set on a 3-0 run, capped by a deuce-point that could have sent it to a tiebreaker, but instead gave her the break for the set.
In the second set, Herea broke first to move out to a 4-2 lead, but Fliegner finished the match on a 4-0 run, including evening the set, 4-4, on a deuce-point break.
The next collegiate event for the Longhorns will be the ITA Texas Regionals, which start on Thursday, Oct. 10, in Fort Worth.
