Men’s Tennis’ Gorzny reaches singles semifinals of ITA All-Americans

Junior Sebastian Gorzny won two matches on Friday, including a top-five victory, to advance and also qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships.
Tulsa, Okla. – Texas Men's Tennis junior No. 30 Sebastian Gorzny reached the singles semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa on Friday.
Gorzny posted two wins on the day to advance, first over No. 5 Colton Smith of Arizona in the round of 16, followed by No. 39 Lui Maxted in the quarterfinals. The wins also qualified Gorzny for the NCAA Singles Championships, which will take place in the fall for the first time from Nov. 19-24.
Gorzny earned a top-five victory by topping the fifth-seeded Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the morning session. Smith picked up the only break of the first set on a deuce point for a 3-1 lead and maintained it until closing out the set on serve on another deuce point. Gorzny opened the second set with a pair of deuce-point wins for a hold and break, and then consolidated for a 3-0 lead. The second set would also just have the one break on the way to a 6-3 win for Gorzny. In the third, Gorzny would again collect the only breaks, which he bookended the set with, including winning the match on a deuce point. Gorzny will next face No. 71 Aidan Kim of Ohio State in his semifinal match on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
Junior No. 29 Jonah Braswell also played a top-five opponent in the round of 16 on Friday, however he fell to 3 seed #3 Oliver Tarvet of San Diego, 6-1, 6-1. He will play in the consolation bracket against the #6 Radu Papoe of Cornell at 12:30 p.m. CT
