Mark records 20 points and Vokietaitis adds 19 to lead the Longhorns on Wednesday night.
AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate guard Tramon Mark posted a game-high 20 points and sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis added 19 points to pace Texas (2-1) to a 93-58 win over FDU (0-3) on Wednesday night in Moody Center. The Longhorns improved to 27-1 all-time in non-conference home games in Moody Center with the victory.
Mark converted 9-of-13 field goals and added four rebounds, two assists and one block in 28 minutes while topping the 20-point mark for the 19th time in his collegiate career. Vokietaitis went a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor and tallied six rebounds and one block in 19 minutes and finished just two points shy of his career high in scoring (21, twice while at FAU).
Junior Dailyn Swain posted 11 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes, and senior Jordan Pope registered 11 points and three assists without a turnover in 22 minutes. Graduate Lassina Traore pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes.
The Knights jumped out to a 10-2 advantage following a Cyril Martynov layup at the 16:46 mark. Texas responded with a 12-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to grab a 14-10 lead after a Simeon Wilcher three-pointer with 14:14 remaining. A David Jevtic jumper pulled FDU to within 20-15 at the 10:19 mark, before the Longhorns used an 8-0 spurt over the next three-plus minutes to build a 28-15 cushion following a Nic Codie dunk with 7:05 left.
A Martynov free throw trimmed the margin to 32-21 at the 4:11 mark, before Texas went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to increase its advantage to 43-21 after a Swain dunk with 1:18 remaining. The Knights scored the final three points of the half and the Longhorns took a 43-24 lead into the break. Texas held FDU to 26.5-percent (9-34) shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
The Knights cut the deficit to 52-34 following a Taeshaud Jackson three-pointer at the 16:40 mark, but that was as close as FDU would get the rest of the way. After a Joey Niesman jumper trimmed the gap to 59-39 with 12:12 left, Texas responded with a 13-2 spurt over the next three-and-a-half minutes to increase its cushion to 72-41 following a Vokietaitis three-point play at the 8:38 mark. The Longhorns pushed the lead to as much as 38 points (89-51) after a Traore jumper with 2:36 remaining before cruising to the finish line.
Texas returns to the court when it hosts Kansas City on Saturday, Nov. 15. Tip is set for 12 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the game will be streamed nationally on SEC Network+.
