Traore records his 33rd career double-double to pace the Longhorns on Saturday afternoon.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain posted a team-high 13 points and graduate forward Lassina Traore added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Texas to a 71-55 victory over Kansas City (1-3) on Saturday afternoon in Moody Center. The Longhorns earned their third consecutive win and improved to 3-1 on the season.
Swain converted 6-of-9 field goals and tallied seven rebounds in a team-high 30 minutes while recording a team-best plus-minus total of plus-17. Traore, who notched his 33rd career double-double, hit 4-of-6 field goals and grabbed five of his 11 boards on the offensive glass in 23 minutes. Sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis registered 12 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes.
Texas jumped out to an early 7-0 lead following a Tramon Mark layup at the 17:54 mark and never trailed in the contest. The Longhorns increased their advantage to 19-6 after a Simeon Wilcher three-pointer with 12:49 remaining.
A Chendall Weaver free throw gave Texas a 22-8 cushion at the 10:49 mark, before the Roos used a 10-2 spurt over the next four-plus minutes to trim the margin to 24-18 following a U'Riyah Evans jumper with 6:35 left. The Longhorns slowly built the advantage to 14 points (38-24) after a Wilcher three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining, before a pair of Evans free throws with two seconds left narrowed the deficit to 38-26 at the break.
Kansas City pulled to within 50-42 following a Karmello Branch layup at the 10:07 mark. That was as close as the Roos would get for the remainder of the contest, as the Longhorns responded with a 12-0 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes to take a 62-42 cushion after a Jordan Pope layup with 4:25 remaining. Texas increased its cushion to as much as 21 points (69-48) following another Wilcher three-pointer at the 1:43 mark.
Texas is back in action when it hosts Rider on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally on SEC Network.
