AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain recorded a game-high 26 points and junior forward Camden Heide added a career-best 20 points to lead Texas (4-1) to a 99-65 victory over Rider (1-3) on Tuesday night in Moody Center. Sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis also posted 20 points, as a trio of Longhorns topped the 20-point mark in the win.
Swain converted 9-of-11 field goals, tied a career high by hitting 8-of-8 from the free throw line and added five boards, three assists and two steals in 26 minutes. His 26 points were one shy of his collegiate high, as he had 27 while at Xavier last year against Illinois in the NCAA Tournament. Heide went 7-of-11 from the floor, including a career-best 6-of-9 from three-point range, and grabbed five rebounds in 25 minutes.
Vokietaitis converted 6-of-8 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws in 21 minutes and also finished one point shy of tying his collegiate high in points, as he had 21 twice while at FAU last season. Junior guard Simeon Wilcher recorded 12 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 threes, 2-2 FT) and five assists without a turnover in 22 minutes.
The Longhorns scored the opening five points of the contest and raced out to a 14-2 lead following a pair of Swain free throws at the 17:01 mark. Texas increased its cushion to 21-6 after a Chendall Weaver layup in transition with 14:05 remaining, before the Broncs used an 8-0 run over the next two-plus minutes to trim the margin to 21-14 following a Flash Burton three-pointer at the 11:45 mark.
A Burton jumper pulled Rider to within 31-24 with 4:53 left. Texas responded with an 8-0 spurt over the next two-and-a-half minutes to grab a 39-24 advantage after a pair of Wilcher free throws at the 2:06 mark. Wilcher later sank a three-pointer with one second remaining in the half to give the Longhorns a 44-28 lead at the break.
A Burton jumper trimmed the gap to 49-32 at the 18:18 mark, before Texas went on a 7-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to increase its cushion to 56-32 following a Swain dunk in transition with 14:47 left. The Broncs pulled to within 61-41 after a Zion Cruz free throw at the 12:09 mark, but that was as close as Rider would get the rest of the way.
The Longhorns used an 18-5 run over the next five minutes to build a 79-47 advantage following a Vokietaitis layup with 7:13 remaining. Texas increased the lead to as much as 37 points (96-59) after a Wilcher layup at the 1:51 mark before cruising to the finish line.
Texas returns to the court on Monday, Nov. 24 when it travels to Maui to face Arizona State in the opening round of the Southwest Maui Invitational. Tip is set for 10:30 p.m. CT (6:30 p.m. HT) at the Lahaina Civic Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
