Women’s Tennis’ Herea advances to NCAA Singles round of 32

Sophomore Carmen Herea secured a win in her first-round match of the NCAA Singles Championships in Orlando.
Orlando, Fla. – Texas Women's Tennis sophomore Carmen Herea advanced to the NCAA Singles Championships round of 32 on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Herea, ranked No. 21 in the pre-fall rankings downed No. 38 Anna Zyryanova of NC State, 6-1, 6-4. Herea secured the first five games of the match before Zyryanova held for 5-1, however Herea also held to take the first set. She then captured the first four games of the second set, and although Zyryanova held and broke for 4-2, Herea broke back for 5-2. Zyryanova picked up two more games, but Herea served at the match, 6-4.
Next up, Herea will face Eva Shaw of Florida State at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. CT.
The NCAA singles and doubles competition will be conducted November 18-23. This will be the second year the individual championships will be played in the fall after having previously been played in May following the team championships.
