Swain posts a team-high 24 points in Monday’s opening-round loss at the Southwest Maui Invitational.
MAUI, Hawaii — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain recorded a team-high 24 points, but Texas (4-2) dropped a hard-fought 87-86 decision to Arizona State (5-1) on Monday evening at the Lahaina Civic Center in the opening round of the Southwest Maui Invitational. With the loss, the Longhorns will face Chaminade on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 9:30 p.m. CT (5:30 p.m. HT) on ESPN2.
Swain tied his career high in field goals made by converting 10-of-14 from the floor and added five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 35 minutes. Sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis registered 15 points (5-9 FG, 5-7 FT) and eight rebounds in 26 minutes, and graduate guard Tramon Mark tallied 11 points (3-5 FG, 4-5 FT) in 23 minutes. Senior guard Jordan Pope added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes.
Texas jumped out to an 11-7 lead following a Chendall Weaver layup in transition at the 12:40 mark. The Sun Devils used a 5-0 spurt to grab a 14-13 advantage after an Allen Mukeba layup with 10:35 remaining. An Anthony Johnson free throw tied the score at 15-15 at the 9:17 mark, before the Longhorns went on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to build a 23-17 cushion following a Pope three-pointer with 7:35 left.
A Mark three-point play gave Texas a 28-22 margin at the 4:23 mark. The Longhorns built a 32-28 advantage following a Weaver layup with 2:31 remaining, before the Sun Devils closed the half with an 11-2 run to take a 39-34 lead into the break.
After a pair of Bryce Ford free throws gave Arizona State a 44-40 advantage at the 18:18 mark, Texas responded with a 10-2 spurt over the next two minutes to take a 50-46 lead following a Weaver three-pointer with 16:17 left. The Sun Devils trimmed the margin to 69-66 after a Maurice Odom free throw at the 9:27 mark, before the Longhorns answered with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to build a 76-66 cushion following a Vokietaitis layup with 7:33 remaining. Arizona State responded with a 13-2 spurt over the next two-and-half minutes to take a 79-78 lead after an Odom three-pointer at the 5:06 mark.
The final five minutes saw four ties with the last coming at 84-84 following a Massamba Diop hook shot with 59 seconds left. Texas answered with a Swain layup to grab an 86-84 lead with 34 seconds left. Odum knocked down the game-winning three-pointer from the top of the key with 10 seconds left, and the Longhorns committed a turnover on their final possession.
